A member of Argentina's World Cup-winning team is facing disciplinary action for taking illegal substances.

"Alejandro Papu Gomes has received some difficult news," Spanish media outlet Rilevo reported on April 20 (ET), "He could be banned for two years. He tested positive for a banned substance in November 2022."

Papu Gomes is an Argentine international midfielder. He joined Italian club Atalanta in 2014 after playing in his home league and the Italian lower leagues. He has been an integral part of Atalanta's core for nearly seven years, scoring 59 goals and providing 66 assists in 252 games.

Gomes joined Spanish powerhouse Sevilla in 2021 as a result of his performances. He quickly rose to the center of the team with his unique dribbling and passing abilities. Despite a bit of a falling out with his club, he helped Sevilla win the UEFA Europa League in 2022/23.

He was called up to replace Giovanni Lo Celso at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Although he didn't do anything special, he came on as a substitute and helped Argentina win the World Cup. However, news has emerged that could end his career.

According to the media, last November, Gomes was unwell at night and abused his child"s medication without consulting the club"s medical staff.
